Color Me Pretty

(If you haven’t already, there’s still time to enter my Blogoversary Giveaway!)

I never thought I’d want a tattoo. The idea was there, of course, but I never thought I’d find something I liked. I didn’t want it to be unoriginal, and I wanted it to mean something to me.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a tree. (Yeah, I was a weird kid.) I wanted to be Pocahontas. (Who didn’t?) I wanted to be one with nature. So, it makes perfect sense that I’d want my first tattoo to be a tree. A huge tree. On my back/side/stomach. Um, maybe not? After several people telling me that it would hurt, I’m opting for a smaller tattoo for my first one. I’ll do the tree later. Of course, it still has to have meaning. And that’s when I saw this on tumblr:

I’m completely in love with dandelions. They’re beginning to grow again, and I often make wishes on them.

A number of species of Taraxacum are regarded as seed dispersed weeds or ruderals, especially the Common dandelion (T. officinale), which has been introduced over much of the temperate world as a lawn weed. After pollination and flowering is finished, the dandelion flower dries out for a day or two and then the seed-bearing parachutes expand and lift out of the dried flower head. The dried part of the flower drops off and the parachute ball opens into a full sphere. The parachute drops off when the seed strikes an obstacle. Often dandelions are observed growing in crevices near a wall; when the blowing fruits hit the wall, the feathery pappi comes off, dropping the dandelion seeds to the base of the wall or into a crevice. After the seed is released, the parachutes lose their feathered structure and take on a fuzzy, cotton-like appearance, often called “dandelion snow.” Dandelions seeds are often dispersed by young children, who often blow on or kick the clock.

To me, it symbolizes life … and death. It shows that, though we all die, we live on (through others). Just as one single dandelion does; the seeds of one dandelion float off separately, to create many others. Just like my grandparents left a little piece of themselves with each of their children and grandchildren. The memory lives on.

As my first tattoo, it means a lot to me. As for when it will be done, I still don’t know. I’m hoping on this weekend, though. As for my tree tattoo? I was thinking of going with something like this:

Yeah. Ouch.

I just love the dandelion. It’s very unique and the symbolism you have behind it will mean a lot! :)

I LOVE that dandelion tattoo. Great idea.

I think the tree one would really hurt!! I have two small tattoo’s, I’m not really into big tattoo’s myself. But it does look cool!

The dandelion shouldn’t hurt too badly. Honestly, I got used to it after a while. My skin kind of got numb…okay, I wouldn’t say “numb” but something like it.

That second one is beautiful but wow, expensive I’ll bet!

Great choice on the dandelion. I saw your tumblr post and I think it’s a beautiful design and PERFECT for a first tattoo. Would you get it in the same spot?

As for the tree, not only would it hurt but it would be expensive! I kind of think that, when it comes to tattoos, smaller is better — more delicate, less noticeable, less obtrusive, less distracting from the beauty of our natural bodies and more simply enhancing.

@Tristan: Yes, it would be expensive. He said it would be over $500, probably. Yikes! Also, I plan on getting the dandelion in the same spot as the girl in the photo.

wow, that’s a gorgeous one. i love the color. I worry about getting older/stretchmarks and color fading? That’s just one of the many reasons I haven’t gotten a tattoo yet. The dandelion one is great! Good luck if/when you get it =)

Love the dandelion! I’m still way too scared to get a tattoo. Good luck once you go for it. For some reason, can’t log onto WordPress through your site…

I’m not normally a big fan of tats… but I truly adore both of those. The dandelion is adorable and original, and the flowers? BREATHTAKING.

Both options are goooorgeous. The first one appeals to me more, I love the simplicity of it. The second is beautiful, obviously, but ouch is right! Are you thinking of doing a small one soon? I’ve held plenty of hands while friends have gotten tattoos, but I’ve never gotten my own.

I’ve been wanting a dandelion for a long time, but every time I’ve googled it for some ideas I was extremely disappointed, most of them were colored and tacky looking because they didn’t have enough detail. I really like this one, I might have to work off this idea ;)
