Weekend Recap & Future Projects

by Megan on June 1, 2009

My weekend was something of a jumbled mess, in all honesty. It disappeared much too quickly, and my days sort of meshed together.

Friday, right after work, I went straight to The House (click for some images) to finish some unpacking. We’ve only taken kitchen things down, and I have everything organized perfectly. (Of course, I’m sure it won’t last very long that way.) (Almost everything we have is brand new from our wedding. We never opened anything, since we knew we’d be living with Husband’s parents for some time.) While I washed every single dish before putting them in their proper place, Husband cleaned carpets. Ugh, the carpets.

The last renters had dogs. Two, little dogs. I like dogs, but I guess these dogs had a little issue with peeing everywhere. And I suppose the owners had some trouble cleaning things up properly. The smell is annoying, and we’re just trying to get it out before we move in completely. (Any suggestions?)

Anyway. We ended up going back to the in-law’s house around ten Friday night, and I was exhausted! We both slept until almost noon the next day, then we continued to clean at The House. I gave up early that night because I was just so tired, and I wanted to enjoy my weekend a little by being able to relax.

Sunday, we spent almost no time at The House, but we did buy a new shower curtain for the main bathroom, and a nice curtain for our bedroom. Today, I think Husband is planning on moving our televisions and maybe some couches down. We’ll be getting the DirecTV, internet, and phone turned on this week, so I want to move in as quickly as possible. I’d hate to be paying for something that we aren’t even using!

It’ll be nice to get moved in and unpacked. Once we’re settled, we have several projects we’re wanting to start.

  • Redecorating the main bathroom (which will be MY bathroom, mostly). I’m thinking about doing the colors in sage and brown. The walls will be a light sage, and the accessories will be dark brown. (I’ve already started by purchasing a chocolate brown fabric shower curtain!) (Suggestions are welcome!)
  • Husband would like to plant an herb garden in the front yard. I would like to plant a flower garden and spruce up the front porch a bit.
  • We’d like to eventually replace the carpet with new carpet OR hardwood/laminate wood flooring. This will be way down the line, though.

There are other things, I’m sure, but those are three things we’ll be focusing on. We may just have to take it one room at a time, though.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to sleep there at some point this week. I’m just looking forward to going home after work to a quiet, empty (aside from Husband) house.

P.S. Today is my half-birthday! I’ll be twenty-one (finally!) in six months.

Suggestions for the pet smell: PEPPERMINT soap or believe it or not Peppermint extract.

You can also do a white vinegar, hot water mix and pour it on the carpet, of course absorbing it all after about two minutes of letting it sit on there. Vinegar is supposed to completely negate/eliminate the smell of pee/ammonia.

Peppermint soap, diluted, really helps to negate the scent as well.

I know what you mean about weekends being one big blur. I feel the same way as of late =(

@nora: Thanks! I’ll mention the vinegar thing to Husband.

Happy half birthday! I don’t come from a pet family, so I don’t have recommendations on the carpet, but I hope everything goes well with the move!

I did my apartment bathroom in dark chocolate and cream colours! Love it. But I kind of wish ALL of our towels were in those colours because when I first set it up it looked SO nice but now it has pink and blue and yellow towels in it too! Ha.

No advice for getting the animal smell out, but all your pictures look GREAT!! It looks like such an awesome, cozy starter home!!

Moving into a new house sounds so exciting! The boyfriend and I are discussing investing in our own little place in a year or two. I’m just thrilled at the prospect of having somewhere that’s ours. I love that phrase, ours.

My advice for the animal smell is if you can’t locate where it’s coming from, wash your floors/baseboards with a diluted bleach/water mixture. I would be totally for trying out the vinegar mixture if you knew where it was coming from – but if not, don’t mess around. I would also recommend having any carpets cleaned either by renting a cleaner (they’re easy to use) or by having a cleaner come in on the cheap. That smell will hang around unless you address it – any money you spend is well spent!

If you really don’t want to bleach I would buy Nature’s Miracle or a similar enzyme pet cleaning product from any pet store. The enzymes in them break down the smell in the air (like Fabreeze but for pee! lol), but again – if there’s actually pee in the carpet or on the floor somewhere it’ll keep coming back.

Love the house, you guys will have so much fun! I’m so bothered that the renters let the dogs pee around it though- when we moved into our house there was cat pee in the basement & we had to bleach the whole basement but it was so good when it went away!

@Amber: I’m hoping to get some brown and sage towels to match. I put the shower curtain up yesterday, and it looks great! It’ll look even better once the walls are sage.

@Ellie: It’s definitely a great feeling! I can already tell that it’ll be so much better than an apartment.

@Kyla: Thanks for the suggestion! We tried the vinegar yesterday, and it seems like it’s working … But I guess we’ll know for sure today. We actually bought a shampoo specifically for pet odors, and we have a rug doctor of sorts, but it must be really set in. We may end up having to re-do the carpet. (Hopefully it won’t come to that!)
