At least it doesn’t smell like pee anymore.

by Megan on June 15, 2009

I’ve mentioned before that the previous renters of our house had dogs. These dogs obviously used the bathroom everywhere in the house, and Husband and I did everything we knew possible to clean it up. Apparently, it was a two-year-old mess because nothing helped. (We thought the vinegar had helped, but the pee smell came back a couple days later.) After this past weekend, though, we are now carpetless. (Well, until the end of this week/beginning of next.)

Saturday, after being completely fed up with the smell, we ripped up the carpet in the entire house. I’m not kidding you, it was horrible. Once we threw the stained carpet onto the front lawn, the house smelled so much better! We’re now ripping up staples before the carpet installers come to put our new, good-smelling carpet in. Once the new carpet is installed, we’ll be able to move everything in so that we can (finally!) settle down and relax.

With so many things going on with the house, Husband and I won’t be able to do anything too expensive for our anniversary (which is Wednesday). I think we’ll be going out Saturday, but we both agreed to wait a couple weeks before really celebrating our anniversary + moving into our own home.

I just feel like it’s one thing after another, and I really can’t wait for everything to be finished so that we can breathe.

Oh, I’m bummed the vinegar wasn’t a permanent solution for you! I’m sorry to hear that =( But new carpet is exciting! perhaps a fun little picnic on the new soft carpet with your husband, by candlelight could serve as your anniversary celebration/present to each other?

I’m so glad you guys are getting rid of the carpet- make sure you bleach the floors before they install it, just to make sure it’s gone for good!

Home reno’s can really suck the life out of you, I’m sure that just flopping on the couch with pizza for your anniversary would make you happy – as long as you weren’t pulling up carpet and scouring floors! =)

You only have to do this stuff once & then it’s yours forever. Keep up the amazing work!

Stressful! That sucks that the smell didn’t come out!!! Before you know it I’m sure that everything will settle down and you will finally be able to just enjoy your time together!

I’d think just having your own house is anniversary present enough. For me anyway. :)

I know it really sucks about the carpet being so bad before, BUT you are getting brand new carpet! Carpet that you can walk around barefoot on and know that your toes are the first to touch it. Seriously, that’s worth it! :) As far as your anniversary… I say recreate a special moment you have had that you go back to when he makes you mad. I know I do that haha :)

Don’t you hate how you always have to end up shelling out money to fix something right when you need it for celebrations? I swear, that always happens to us. BUT that is exciting that you are getting fresh, clean, good smelling carpet! I bet you can’t wait!!

@nora: We may have to do something like that! It would definitely be relaxing.

@Kyla: We’re planning on cleaning the floors as soon as we get all of the staples up. We’re going to paint, too, just to remove any smell that is lingering in the walls.

@Elly: It was definitely the last resort, but I’m pretty excited about it.

@Amber: By the beginning of next week, we should have the new carpet, so relaxation time isn’t too far off! :)

@Rachie: Oh, I agree! The fact that we get to actually be alone is such a wonderful gift.

@Tiffany: You’re so right! We had been wearing flip-flops any time we walked around the house … It’s really annoying.

@shannon: It’s a blessing in disguise, I suppose. I hate that we have to spend the money, but it’ll be so much better knowing that the carpet is clean. We just want to be able to invite friends over to a clean-smelling house, and we definitely didn’t want to live in that!
