And the beat goes on

by Megan on August 25, 2009

I miss this blog. I miss wanting to write. Well, I still do want to write, but I’m having trouble of coming up with anything aside from work or school things. However, I have some ideas floating around. (One involving my film camera + the town I live in, but that’s all I’m giving away.)

This weekend, Husband and I are taking a mini-vacation (before classes begin next week) with my in-laws. We’ll be heading to Gatlinburg, which is just less than three hours from where I live. We’re leaving Friday afternoon with a return home Sunday evening. I’m looking forward to it. The last “vacation” we had was our honeymoon last year, so this is needed. I’m looking forward to staying in the cozy cabin and skipping across rocks at the creek. (I might be lugging my film camera with me for this; while I’d choose film over digital any day, I really wish I could afford that Nikon D5000. Sigh.)

This is completely off-topic, but I have a question for all of you tech savvy people. Basically, I’m going to be purchasing a new laptop soon. I’ve had my Dell since my senior year of high school, and I’ve never had problems with it … but I’m itching for some new/upgraded technology, especially since I’m taking online classes this semester. I’m just unsure of whether I should buy another Dell or go for a Macbook. I’ve always wanted a Mac (I love the design, especially), but Dell has been great for me the past few years. What do you think? I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons, so I’d love feedback of any kind (especially if you’ve used both).

Just a sneak peek of where we’ll be staying this weekend.

Awesome cabin!
I’m a PC Girl and I love Dell but I know a lot of gals Looooveee MAC’s so unfortunately I’m little help to you there.

Enjoy your weekend/mini-vacation. I understand how important those can be =)

LOVE the cabin.

Why pay 2.5x more for a mac when you can do everything you need via PC? Like you said, the Dell have served you very well. I have nothing against macs, but if you can do everything you need, why pay for more for something that you’re going to do the same with?

Personally, I’m a HUGE fan of Lenovo laptops. HP laptops are great too. I had a Dell laptop back in the day and it was subpar.

I’m a PC girl, but I hear they’re amazing…

Also? That cabin is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Oh, I cannot resist adding my input when it comes to PC vs Mac questions!

I admit that Macs are generally more expensive, but I’ve had friends who bought refurbished ones for reasonable prices and they are quite happy. I always recommend a Mac, always. And I think they offer a lot more than PCs, in addition to the fancy design.

Ah, the cabin is gorgeous. Enjoy your weekend!

I’ve been a Mac and a PC person. PCs are definitely cheaper and, if you like to play games, there are more games available (which are cheaper as well). Unfortunately, PCs also can get viruses very easily because it is easy to create viruses for them. Macs, on the other hand, are a little bit more expensive all around. However, besides the fact that a Mac gets a virus in 1 and a billion cases, they run very smoothly, their start-up time is three times as fast as any PC, and there’s this thing you can get called Time Machine that will back your computer up automatically if you have an external hard drive. I have a PC but those are the pros and cons to both.

I can’t believe I just did that. I have a Mac and it would take me a lot to go back to my PC.

The cabin looks cute! I don’t know anything about Macs. I tried using one at school at couldn’t figure it out. Just so you know, got a new blog. Trying it again.

I’m in the process of trying to convert to Mac completely. If you can afford the Mac I say go for it. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve been on both sides and I can say I love the Mac. It does offer a lot for the price. Plus, I love that if I ever need to run Windows on a Mac for some weird reason, I can. There is software for it. The PC doesn’t offer that. That fact right there means I can have my cake and eat it too. A very splendid cake I might add.

I have both.
I used to be a tried and true Mac lover… I had them ever since I was young, went to college with an iMac and then bought an iBook when I graduated. They obviously have great graphic capabilities… and they are superior to PCs when it comes to staying safe and contracting viruses/not crashing, etc.

The one thing I HATE about Macs is that they come with useless software like Navigator or other weird programs you NEVER use. And they also come with a ridiculously low amount of memory. I think I had 256 on my brand new Mac when I bought it, which is just ridiculous. It ended up being stupidly bogged down after all my pic and music uploads.

I bought a PC about eight months ago cause I wanted to be completely compatible with work. Cause let’s face it, unless you’re a graphic designer, every place of business uses a PC and it’s just easier to work back and forth, or try to convince your job to upload their version of Adobe CS onto your computer cause you “need it for work.” ;) I like the PC cause it’s super quick, has tons of memory and is CHEAP. I mean, the price of them at Best Buy is like chump change compared to a Mac. But the whole researching Spyware and stuff to protect it is crap. I hate that about PCs.

That being said… sorry this is so long… I’d definitely get something other than a Dell if you’re going the PC route. They’re all the same on the inside, as far as processor, so go for the prettiest computer on the outside. HPs have lovely screens and a fancy design. Dell has clunky keys, and the ones in my price range didn’t have the LCD screen.

Phew. Obvs I’m a computer geek. Good luck!

I just had to replace my Toshiba PC laptop after three years. I used it LOTS though.

I’ve never actually owned a Mac, but I just find them really confusing and annoyint to use. So I would recommend a PC, but I’m not a huge computer nerd or anything!

Aww congrats on the mini-vacation! It’s always wonderful to get away for a while. I’ve been finding myself trying to do writing daily, despite my lack of inspiration.

I’ve worked with Macs and PCs. I have to agree with Je. Macs are simplistic and ideal in some ways for students. However, there’s plenty of software not available for Macs (even if they come up with apps daily.) I mean for minimalistic usage, I would say a Mac is okay. I just don’t justify the price for the limited usage.

However, with buying a PC so close to release of Windows 7, you can get a free upgrade. PCs come with a valuable amount of space and software compatibility. I also agree with buying an HP. There’s so many features that come with HP laptops for cheap price! Integrated webcams, great media hardware. You can build your own laptop to customize your needs. I would check that out.

I’m not a PC hater at all, but I’ve had my Mac for two years now and though my Dells were good to me, my Mac is like a member of the family. I love it to pieces. Have fun on your vacation!

14 Ashley August 28, 2009 at 12:29 am

Also, I’ve never had a single compatibility problem with my Mac.

15 Jenny August 31, 2009 at 12:20 pm

I’ve had a lot of pc problems. A virus completely trashed my last laptop, so I’m splurging (investing!) in a mac this time around. Apple offers student discounts in their online store, so you can save a couple hundred dollars there.

I’m jealous of your vacation! My family rented a cabin a couple months ago, and it was absolutely wonderful. Enjoy!
