Nightmares

by Megan on October 27, 2009

In honor of Halloween–and since I’ve seen the topic of “nightmares” come up on a couple blogs (here and here)–I want to talk about the same subject. Fun, right?

Though I hardly ever have nightmares now (knock on wood), I had them often when I was a child. My nightmares have always been fairly colorful (literally!) and I can remember a great amount of detail about a specific few. Care to jump into my head for a moment?

Nightmare #1 - (I know I was younger than ten.) I was standing on my enclosed front porch, and you know those dreams where you couldn’t move, no matter how hard you tried? Yeah, it was one of those. So, I was standing there, looking out the window into the darkness. There was in acre or two of land in front of that window, and there was a red car in the distance, driving toward me. I was terrified, but I couldn’t move. I continued to have this dream nightly for who-knows-how-long, and on the last night, the car finally made it’s way to me. The car stopped; a man got out, walked to the window, and just stared at me. I don’t remember a face.

Nightmare #2 - I was in a red wagon (there’s that color red again), and a vampire was pulling me around in it. Now, this was no Edward Cullen–this vampire was mean. As he pulled me around in the red wagon, he killed everyone in my family while making me watch. He never killed me, though. Even when I woke up from that nightmare, I could still see his eyes when I closed mine. This was also a recurring dream.

Nightmare #3 - (The strangest of the three.) This one is a little fuzzier than the previous two. Mostly, all I remember from this (recurring) dream was waking up from it. I remember the day it started–I was at my grandparent’s house. Apparently, it caused me to sleep walk because I always ended up waking up in another room with someone asking if I was okay. One time, after the dream, I woke up outside my house with my mom chasing after me. She said my eyes were glazed over and I had been crying and saying, “I want my mommy!” When asked if I could explain the dream, I never could. I remember feeling like there was some sort of an evil force trying to suffocate me, though. Eventually, those dreams stopped completely, and I haven’t sleep-walked since.

Now that I’ve shared with you three of my most memorable nightmares, I want you to share with me. Do you have nightmares now as an adult? What about recurring nightmares? Do you dream in color or black and white?

I hardly ever dream. When I do I am usually having nightmares. The nightmares usually focused on someone I loved dying. I only remember two at the moment.

The first was a while back and I only remember bits of it. All I remember are the giant, killer bees which chased me, my little sister, and my dad. The end of the dream never really came that I remember, but this was one of those recurring dreams and each time I got a little further. From what I recall they got my sister and my dad but not me. But this one is a bit fuzzy for me so I could be wrong.

The second wasn’t that long ago. I dreamt that I the Boyfriend had fallen for some other girl. She had taken over him, kind of like a siren or something. She essentially sang to him and wove him under her spell. But he didn’t know me anymore and went on to spend his life with her. I’m not sure what triggered this dream and I’m not scared now, but at the time it was pretty freaky. It felt so real even though I know he’d never do something like that. Of course in the dream it wasn’t his fault…

Fun post for the Halloween weekend!

Ugh, yes, I had two recurring dreams as a little kid.

In one, I was Alice from Alice in Wonderland, with the blue/white dress, black shoes & socks. The only difference was that I retained my brunette hair. I was locked in an outside lumber yard. Huge palettes of wood were piled up all around me, it was raining and there was mud all over the place. I was frantically running trying to find a way out but I never could. At one point, each time I had the dream, a man would come over the loudspeaker and shout at me, telling me I could never leave and then he would chase me around. I suspect he was either really tall or NOT a man at all but some sort of creature because I could never see him/his face and he made a loud sound when running behind me.

I also used to sleepwalk but no idea why. I often woke up in front of my parents bedroom door or, even scarier, in front of the mirror, staring at myself. I hated it. It finally stopped in sixth grade. I couldn’t tell you what dream I was having when I was sleepwalking either! How odd is that!?

I used to sleepwalk and have nightmares ALL the time as a kid, too!

My most vivid one is that captain hook was under my bed :S

I can’t remember the last time I had a nightmare. Sure, I have dreams that aren’t that great but real nightmares? Just don’t get them that much. I wonder what that’s about…

I usually have nightmares about my boyfriend being unfaithful (hello, insecurity!), but the most recurring dreams/nightmares I had were last semester. I kept dreaming that I was running around a department store, trying to protect a little girl. I always picked her up and held her close to my chest. She was maybe 3 or 4, and I came to figure out that she looked exactly like I did when I was young- blond curly hair, blue eyes, pale skin. I’m sure I was dealing with some emotional problem at the time, because the dreams stopped after a month or two.

Another weird nightmare from when I was little: I dreamed of yellow tiger eyes staring at me, for what felt like all night. The weirder thing? My dad had the same nightmare on the same night. Tell me that’s not creepy.

I’m not sure if this is a nightmare or not but I wake up in the middle of the night thinking I see a man in the room. It happens all the time and my Mom does the same thing too.

I’ve often wondered the same thing about sign language. Since I sign, I wonder if all my conversations in my dreams are in sign language or not? I’m not sure.

Oh I wish I didn’t still have nightmares, but I do quite often..

I’ve been having apocalyptic dreams recently. And tornado dreams. I have no idea what that might mean…

I’ve never really had a scary dream… weird huh? I’ve had dreams of falling, but no freaky stuff!

yeah I’ve definitely had my share of nightmares. Some have been violent or just plain ol’ scary and others involve me giving birth but with strange circumstances.
