Blogging Through the Years: Kindergarten

by Megan on November 11, 2009

This is part of a “Blogging Through the Years” series started by Ashley. My other Blogging Through the Years posts: Pre-K.

  • The year was 1994. My kindergarten teacher (Mrs. T) was amazing. I remember her being a family friend, so I had even been to her house a few times. I’m pretty sure she lived on an Ostrich farm. Crazy, right?
  • I remember having a girl in my class that would go around biting people during nap time. She threw tantrums all the time. I actually imagined myself punching her in the face one day, but I was way too shy to do that.
  • My sister started pre-k this year, and I thought it was cool being someone’s big sister. I always made sure she got on the bus, even if I had to go by her classroom to walk her to it. If she wasn’t on the bus by a certain point, I would get really scared and protective. She had bouncy curls, baby blue eyes, and she was my “baby.”
  • I have a hard time remembering anything I learned this year, sadly. I’m assuming I learned to read and some writing skills.
  • I always had lonnng hair (to my waist). This was the year I decided to get it cut, and mom let me get it cut to my shoulders.

Do you remember your first haircut or any crazy things about past teachers?

P.S. I was featured as Alana’s Blog Friend Crush today!

Birthday Wishlist

by Megan on November 10, 2009

In exactly three weeks, I’ll be twenty-one. Since it’s on a Tuesday, I won’t be able to do anything exciting, aside from renew my driver’s license (so that it will no longer say “Under 21 until 12-01-2009″). However, I decided to compile a list of things I’d like for my birthday.

  • I’d definitely like to see New Moon. This might actually happen BEFORE my birthday, since it comes out on November 20th. However, there is a new theater in Chattanooga (the first green theater in the world!) that has a VIP room. Where they serve alcohol and snacks.
  • I want to buy wine (all by myself!) to make sangria (from the Pioneer Woman’s cookbook) and watch Gilmore Girls and/or movies with Husband.
  • I want to see The Nutcracker (performed by the Chattanooga Ballet). It’s not until mid-December, but I’m going to sneak it by as “something to do for my birthday!”
  • I want to go to a restaurant and order a drink. (Any suggestions?)
  • I want someone to make me a birthday cake of yellow cake with chocolate icing.
  • And of course, world peace, more food for the hungry, and a cure for cancer. (No, seriously. I would like all of those. Can anyone get on that for me?)

Obviously, I want to keep it as lowkey as possible. How did you celebrate your 21st birthday?

One Semester Closer

by Megan on November 9, 2009

Early this morning, I registered for the classes I’ll be taking in the spring. Yesterday, I sat at my computer for a good hour, making a spreadsheet that planned out what classes I would need to take to get my Associate’s Degree before I’m able to transfer to a university. I think I’ve finally realized that I definitely want to do psychology, though. After looking through all of the classes I’ll need to take, it’s easy to say I’ll enjoy each and every one of them.

For the spring semester, I have twelve hours of classes planned (making me a full time student once again–I only took nine hours this semester). My classes are:

  1. Introduction to Women’s Studies. My major requires me to take six hours of Behavioral and Social Science courses that aren’t in my field of study. (This will fulfill three of said hours.) I’m so excited to be taking this class. Though I’m hardly a feminist, being a woman makes me interested in what women did in history.
  2. Introduction to Sociology. This course will fulfill the other three hours I need in Behavioral and Social Science. I’m interested in this class and learning about different culturies/societies.
  3. Western World Literature I. I took a U.S. History course, but I found out I don’t really need it. (Luckily, I can use it as a Humanities credit, though.) Instead, I had the option to take Western Humanities I OR World Civilizations I. I chose the former, and I’m excited about learning about the classical, medieval, and Renaissance periods.
  4. Human Growth & Development. I took Child Growth & Development this semester, and I LOVED IT. It was, by far, my favorite class. I figured HG&D would be easy since I’ve studied growth up to teenagers so far.

There are so many classes I’m interested in taking, and I just want to keep adding more, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself. All of my classes will be online, which is really all I can do at the moment, since I work full time, Monday through Friday.

After going over my schedule for the next few  semesters, it looks like I’ll be able to graduate with my Associate’s Degree in the spring of 2011. It seems far away, but it’s really closer than it looks, and I’m excited. After that, I plan on transferring to a university in the Fall of 2011 to work on my Bachelor’s and eventually, my Master’s degree.

Of the classes I’m taking next semester, have you taken any of them? If so, what did you think? Any “helpful hints” for a full time student/full time worker/full time wife? (Husband will also be attending school full time this semester–two of his classes online and two classes on campus while I’m at work.)

Blogging Through the Years: Pre-K

by Megan on November 7, 2009

Ashley at Writing to Reach You started a blog series called “Blogging Through the Years” in which she talks about things she remembers from each grade during school. I think it’ll be fun to test my memory a bit, so I’m going to play along.

  • Pre-Kindergarten was my first year of school … I think I was around four. I had two teachers, and I remember having tables to sit at instead of individual desks. We ate breakfast and lunch at these tables, along with doing classwork.
  • I remember Dad coming to eat lunch with me once, and he sat in one of the tiny chairs at the table. The cafeteria ladies would bring our food to the classroom on carts, and I remember having special juice boxes because I was allergic to milk.
  • I had a “boyfriend” at the time (and I believe he had a chili-bowl haircut), and I kissed him behind one of those tables.
  • We also had “stations” where we could play “house” and things of that nature.
  • I made my first best friend that year. (She and I were friends up until fourth grade, when I was in a different class than she was. We recently found each other on Myspace, however.)
  • I remember learning to tie my shoes, but it was so hard! I learned my ABCs, too.

Can you remember pre-k or daycare?
