Getting to Know SV: School

by Megan on April 8, 2010

If you’ve been reading for some time, you know that I’m a full time college student. Since I also work full time, I take all of my classes online. As I was registering for my Fall 2010 semester, I got to thinking about how exciting it is to me to know what classes people take to get them through school. So, I’ve compiled a list of the classes I have taken thus far–don’t worry, it’s not too many! I’m only halfway through my A.S. degree.

Fall 2007 : Early Childhood Education Major

  • Composition I — My professor was hilarious. She was fun, and I made A’s on all of my assignments (even though, I have to admit, I took the easy route one too many times).
  • Art Appreciation — I’m pretty sure my professor was a hippie, but he was awesome. I skipped his class one too many times, though. I somehow managed to make a B in that class, though. Once I skipped, though, I realized how easy it was to skip. Bad habits.
  • Psychology — This was before I decided to major in psychology, and I skipped this class often as well. It was in a huge auditorium, and I felt like I wasn’t learning much in the lecture. I made a C in this class (probably because of skipping so often), so I barely made it.
  • Statistics — I tested out of College Algebra, and this class was all too easy. I made an A, though I also skipped this class as much as I could.

Spring 2008 : The Semester I Dropped Out

  • Comp II — My old roommate was in this class, and we also worked together. When she moved out, things didn’t end well, so I dreaded going to this class. I stopped going altogether (here and in my other classes) in March or April.
  • Children’s Literature — LOVED this course. I took it online, and I was able to read some of my favorite childhood books. Not sure WHY I had to mess it up by dropping out.
  • U.S. Government — I’m not big into politics, so this class was dreaded.
  • U.S. History I — My professor constantly said “um,” and it was truly annoying. I’m not a big fan of history, either, so it was easiest to drop this class.

So, that was my first year of college. I really didn’t put much effort into it, and I wish I would have. I was just so tired of school. So, I dropped out and quit my job. Husband and I got married that June, and I got another job (working at the hotel). I spent Fall 2008 & Spring 2009 away from school, though I desperately wanted to go back. I got a great job (my current job) in January 2009, so that’s what I did in the Fall of 2009. I’ll save those classes for another day, though.

What classes did you take your first year in college? What were your favorites? Least favorites? If you didn’t go to college, tell me about your jobs since high school! (I might have to go into a post about those one day as well!)

I took whatever was assigned to me as a freshman. Sadly you have no say in this. I didn’t reach my favorite course until about junior or senior year – mostly because I switched majors twice.

From what I remember though, my English courses from freshman year were nice. I had an excellent, if not quirky professor.

So far I’ve loved User Interface Design the most. Sadly I had to drop this course for the semester. Good news though – I plan to register for it once again in the Fall of this year. I have a passion for design and why people design things around us in the way that they do.

I didn’t like most of the classes I took as first year, because I didn’t really get to choose them. They were all just to meet requirements. But, I did have this fun German class at the crack of dawn every morning and I actually took an elective costume making class too. Then the usual philosophy, math, and english. My least favorite class was art history, which had a lot to do with the professor. I really started enjoying my classes more in my last two years of college.
